April 2026 Meeting

The Stoddard County Historical Society is proud to host local historian and Marble Hill resident Brian Derton for an in-depth look at the journalistic legacy of Tom Allen.

In the 1890s, Tom Allen revolutionized local media as the editor of the Marble Hill Press, the first modern newspaper in Bollinger County. More than just a newsman, Allen was a meticulous documentarian who captured the physical growth of our region building by building.

What We’ll Explore:
The Blueprint of Two Towns: Brian Derton will walk us through Allen’s remarkable records of the construction of nearly every building in both Marble Hill and Old Lutesville.

Industrial & Educational Landmarks: See the history behind the business blocks, local industry, and the iconic Rosemont Hall at the Mayfield-Smith Academy.

A Regional Leader: Learn about Allen’s influence as the first president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association, where he helped shape the future of journalism in our corner of the state.

Whether you are a student of history, a resident of Bollinger or Stoddard County, or simply curious about how our towns were built, join us for an evening of discovery and storytelling.
